New homes at Station Road, Hungerford

Building Design & Street Scene

The proposed building has been sensitively designed given the site’s proximity to the railway line and neighbouring conservation area.  The scale, height and massing have all been considered to create a building that is visually reduced in form and appearance, by way of good design, building articulation and material finishes.

We have produced the following computer-generated images and elevation drawings, to give a sense of how the development would appear in the street scene:

The eaves and ridge lines of the new buildings are varied to create a soft and attractive silhouette on the sky line, with upper floors partially hidden and recessed back.

The proposed new homes would be 3 storeys with additional accommodation in the roof. Gable ends are proposed to create articulation within the roofscape. There is a mix of clay tiles on the gables, and slate-style tiles on the mansard roofs. Metal balconies provide further interest to the proposed elevations.

All residents will have their own parking space within the parking area to the rear of the site.

Landscaped space is provided in excess of Local Plan policy, with each home having 28sqm of amenity and this includes a secure and private balcony or ground level terrace.

The scale and positioning of the new homes aims to respect the Railway Tavern – a non-designated heritage asset and the adjacent Conservation Area, as well as views from beyond the railway station looking back towards the site.

The internal designs of the homes have been carefully considered and  optimise the dual and triple aspect rooms to benefit from solar gain.

The new communal gardens provide the opportunity to turn hardstanding into high quality landscaped open space with new tree planting, shrubs and seating areas for the enjoyment of residents.

The courtyard parking areas will be finished in quality surface materials allowing for sustainable drainage systems below, and a number of the parking spaces will include trellis canopies which will create a more attractive and landscaped environment.
